I’ve had the Logjam Steel Six lapsteel for a few weeks now and I’m very pleased with it. Howard was happy to answer a few questions I had before I bought it, and it arrived promptly and well packaged after I made the purchase.
The Steel Six is a really good looking instrument and the rustic woodgrain is even more attractive in person than in the photos. It’s got a decent heft to it without being heavy, and feels very solid and generally well made. Despite being delivered during the UK’s recent heatwave (it was about 38 degrees and the box was warm to the touch when it arrived ) it was still pretty much in tune when I opened it – those Gotoh tuners don’t mess around!
The Steel Six has a lovely warm, rich sound, and even unplugged it has sustain for days thanks to the brass bridge and nut. Run through a clean amp with some reverb the Tonerider Alnico classic humbucker produces a soaring, sonorous tone that’s fluid and vocal, and when you throw on some overdrive it becomes thick and punchy with a meaty midrange growl. All in all the tone is really rounded and full bodied, and I’m glad Logjam went with a humbucker over the more typical single coil pickup.
As far as I’m aware the only other lapsteel in this price range is the Gretsch G5700 and while I’m sure they’re decent instruments I think they’d really struggle to beat the Steel Six when it comes to price-quality ratio. Also, at the end of the day, who wouldn’t prefer a handcrafted instrument made from a big block of European beech by a small independent company to something mass produced by a multinational conglomerate?
TLDR – The Steel Six is a bit different, full of character, solid as they come, and sounds great – I’d very much recommend it.
